Location & Transportation

Advantageous Location and Advanced High-Speed Transportation Network

Gunma Prefecture is located near the center of the main island of Japan, approximately 100 km away from Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

In Gunma Prefecture, the Kan-Etsu Expressway, Tohoku Expressway, and Joetsu Shinkansen run to the north and south, and the Joshin-Etsu Expressway, Kita-Kanto Expressway, and Hokuriku Shinkansen run to the east and west. This makes it possible to rapidly develop business with scattered bases in areas far and wide, making Gunma Prefecture perfectly suited for production and physical distribution base facilities.

In March 2011, the Kita-Kanto Expressway was fully opened, raising the level of convenience of doing business with both domestic and international companies.

High-Speed Transportation Network

The Kan-Etsu, Tohoku, and Joban Expressways radially extend out from Tokyo, and the Kita-Kanto Expressway circularly connects these expressways at points 100-150 km away from Tokyo. This expressway also connects major cities in Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki with the Ibaraki Port Hitachinaka Port Area and was fully opened in March 2011.

Using the Kita-Kanto Expressway, you can access expressways going towards the Tohoku and Chukyo/Kansai areas without passing through Tokyo.

Joetsu & Hokuriku Shinkansen Lines

With the Joetsu Shinkansen linking the areas between Tokyo and Niigata and the Hokuriku Shinkansen linking the areas between Tokyo and Kanazawa, Takasaki Station is a central railway travel junction that is convenient for travel in all directions.

Also, in eastern areas of Gunma, you can make use of Kumagaya station and Honjo-Waseda station in Saitama.

Ota International Cargo Terminal (OICT)

The OICT began operations in the 2000 fiscal year, and in addition to conducting import and export customs procedures, it conducts a full battery of operations including distribution, cargo handling, packaging, storage, shipping, logistics, and physical distribution management.

In recent years, the caseload and weight handled by the OICT has mainly centered on seaborne import and export, and these numbers have remained stable. The OICT acts as an entrance to the sea for the inland prefecture of Gunma, and it has contributed to logistics cost reductions and shortened lead times for companies located in the prefecture.
