English : Automobile Tax (Jidosha Zei)

Please pay your 2016 automobile tax on or before May 31, 2016.

Who must pay?

The prefectural automobile tax (Jidosha-zei) is imposed on an individual who owns an automobile that is registered with the Gunma Branch of Kanto Transportation Bureau (Gunma Unyu Shikyoku) as of April 1 every year. However, if you purchase an automobile on an installment plan, and the seller retains its ownership, the user must pay the tax.
April 1 refers to 12 midnight of April 1, 2016. The annual tax is payable by the registered owner of an automobilethe.
The annual tax for light vehicle, motorbike, or scooter is imposed on an individual who owns such vehicle by their municipal government. For details, please contact your local city/town/village hall.

Automobile tax also becomes payable when any of the followings apply:

  1. You sold your automobile on or before March 31, 2016 but did not complete the transfer registration (change of ownership) procedure at the Gunma Branch of Kanto Transportation Bureau.
  2. You requested your dealer for either trade-in or disposal of your automobile on or before March 31, 2016 but did not complete the transfer registration (change of ownership) or deletion registration (haisha or disposal) procedures of your automobile at the Gunma Branch of Kanto Transportation Bureau.
  3. You completed the transfer registration of your automobile (changed its ownership to someone who lives within or outside of Gunma) on or after April 1, 2016.
  4. Your Vehicle Inspection Certificate (Shaken-sho) is expired, but you did not complete its deletion registration (haisha or disposal) at the Gunma Branch of Kanto Transportation Bureau.

When is the due date?

Your tax payment notice will be mailed to your address on May 1, 2016. The due date is Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

Where to pay it?

You can pay at convenience stores, banks, post offices, Gyosei-Kenzei Jimusho or the Prefectural Administrative Affairs & Tax Offices, and Jidosha-zei Jimusho or the Automobile Tax Office.

You get a partial tax refund after you complete the deletion registration (haisha or disposal) of your automobile.

You will be eligible for tax refund if you have completed a deletion registration (haisha or disposal) of your automobile after you have paid your automobile tax on time. You won’t be eligible if the deletion registration is completed sometime in March 2016.

Please hold on to your Tax Certificate.

It’s important that you keep your tax certificate for certain mandatory inspections like Keizoku Kensa or Renewal Inspection and Kozo-tou Henko Kensa or Structural Change Inspection, etc. When you sell your automobile, please give the tax certificate to the buyer. If you buy an automobile, make sure you get the tax certificate from the seller.
