Start of reservations for vaccinations against N1H1 flu

--For those with underlying diseases and pregnant women--

Vaccinations of people with underlying diseases and pregnant women are soon to begin.  We advise that you consult with your doctor and make a reservation if you would like to have an inoculation.

It is scheduled that inoculations for people who are hospitalized with underlying diseases are going to begin firstly in the beginning of November, and then inoculations for people who have underlying diseases but are not hospitalized and for pregnant women are going to follow.

Other people eligible for early inoculation are requested to make reservations, at the earliest, about a month before the inoculations for each priority group begin for fear that it may cause confusion in ordinary services at medical institutions if many people make reservations all at once.

People with underlying diseases and pregnant women

1)  Inoculations for people with underlying diseases are firstly going to begin with hospitalized patients who want vaccination, and then inoculations for people who are not hospitalized are going to begin.  Also inoculations for people with underlying diseases are provided by following a step-by-step timetable where people at high risk for severe illnesses are prioritized over those at lower risk.  (Inoculations for lower risk people are going to begin in early December.)  Please consult with your doctor to know which risk group you belong to.  People with diseases eligible for early inoculation are as follows:

2)  Preservatives are added to the currently distributed vaccines.  Vaccines without preservatives are going to be distributed in the mid-November in order for pregnant women to minimize the risk on fetuses.  Please consult with your doctor as to which vaccine to choose.

1)  Consult with your family doctor first, if you have one.

2)  Get an inoculation at your family doctor or a medical institution which your doctor introduces to you.

3)  If you do not have a family doctor or if your doctor does not provide vaccinations, get inoculations at medical institutions listed in paragraph 4 after making a reservation.

4)  A reservation should be made to have an inoculation.  Since your family doctor will place an order for the vaccine upon receiving your reservation, it will take some time before you can have an inoculation.

5)  In most cases, patients of 2009 H1N1 flu have recovered after developing mild symptoms, and medicines including Tamiflu have been found effective.  On the other hand, while the H1N1 vaccine is expected to have a certain effect in preventing severe illnesses from occurring, vaccination does not mean that you will never be infected.  Possible side reactions include swelling at inoculation site, fever, and, in some rare cases, severe symptoms.  Consult with your doctor and decide on your own whether you have a vaccination or not.

6)  Since the supply of the H1N1 vaccine will be limited for the time being, medical staff and people at higher risk for severe illnesses including pregnant women and people with underlying diseases will be given priority if they want to get vaccinations.

7)  The time schedule of inoculations is tentative and it may not be possible for all medical institutions in the prefecture to start inoculations simultaneously because the supply systems for the vaccine are different among different areas.  We ask your understanding.

8)  The national government estimates that it will have vaccines for as many as 77million people by the end of March and that shortages of vaccine will not occur. Stay calm without rushing to make reservations for inoculations.

9)  The number of doses given will be two for the time being. (The national government is going to make a final decision regarding the number of doses by examining the result of clinical studies.)  The cost for the inoculation is \3,600 for the first time and 2,550 for the second time (\3,600 if you have an inoculation at a different medical institution from one that you had the first inoculation).  Municipalities are considering cost assistance programs for lower income households; ask your municipality for details.

10) Note that you need to prepare documents depending on which priority group you belong to.  (See the table in paragraph 2.)
